Description:

This is a substantial, handcrafted wooden sleigh, originating from Austria and Germany, and dated to the period of 1880-1900. The sleigh is characterized by its thickness and features decorative floral and foliate motif carvings on the wooden elements, particularly visible on the sides and back of the seat.

The front of the sleigh is highly decorative, incorporating a carved woman figurehead sitting above the scrollwork,  flanked by two hounds . A unique feature is the inclusion of a seat for a doll behind the main figurehead and a running board at the back of the main passenger seat.

The sleigh's structure features iron runners that are secured over the wooden base. The main wooden body is supported by ornate iron supports featuring distinctive scrolled designs.

Although faded, the sleigh shows evidence that all visible wooden surfaces were exquisitely hand-painted. The finish is heavily distressed, displaying many traces of wear and cracks in the thick wood and paint layer, along with significant rust on the iron runners and cast iron supports.
